About
Jus Gana is the creative identity of James Garner, a multidisciplinary artist whose practice moves between painting, intricate ink drawing, digital and hybrid work, live creation, workshops and music. His images are colourful, playful and wonderfully otherworldly, but beneath the psychedelic surface sits a more contemplative process rooted in intuition, meditation and flow.
Rather than beginning with a predetermined destination, James often allows a drawing to grow organically. His own description of the process begins with something as simple as a dot, giving the pen permission to travel and allowing shapes, creatures and entire visual worlds to emerge as he works. Cosmic, organic, tribal and imagined forms collide, sometimes appearing to belong beneath the ocean and at other times somewhere far beyond Earth.
That intuitive process is closely connected to meditation. James has described drawing as a way of quietening the mind and allowing the act of making itself to become part of the experience. The finished image matters, but so does the state of attention that creates it. This approach has naturally developed into workshops and live-drawing sessions in which other people are encouraged to let go of the pressure to make something 'right' and instead discover what happens when they follow the line.
The festival world feels like a natural home for his work. Jus Gana has appeared across events including LoveJam, Noisily, Virgo, Magic Carpet and Medicine Festival, bringing visual art into environments already shaped by sound, movement, wellbeing and community. Alongside this, James DJs and curates events, allowing music and image to exist as parts of the same creative language.
“I first encountered Jus Gana through this festival circuit, repeatedly seeing his work beautifully presented through independent pop-up stalls. The combination of art, music, festival culture and wellbeing immediately resonated with Imaginative Reaction. Some artists belong naturally in galleries, some in studios, some in fields surrounded by music and people, and some can move between all of them. Jus Gana is one of those artists. It is a pleasure to introduce his world to Imaginative Reaction: an invitation to look a little longer, let the imagination wander and see where the work takes you.”
