About

Jay creates intricate worlds from the shapes most of us walk straight past.

Working predominantly in black and white, his abstract psychedelic line drawings transform faces, creatures, natural forms and imagined characters into densely detailed compositions that invite you to keep looking. There is playfulness in the work, but also an obsessive attention to line, pattern and the possibilities of seeing something differently.

My Story
Based in Hertfordshire, Jay works from a small garage studio where music and drawing become part of the same creative rhythm. Using acrylic pens, he creates predominantly black and white abstract line drawings that sit somewhere between surrealism, psychedelia, illustration and instinctive mark making. JArt

His inspiration begins with something many of us will recognise: seeing images in unexpected places.

For years, Jay found himself noticing faces and creatures within walls, trees and the shapes and textures of his everyday surroundings. Rather than dismissing those observations, he began drawing from them. As the work developed, new figures and forms started revealing themselves within the drawings themselves. JArt

Nature and surrealist art remain important influences, alongside an interest in the different ways each of us interprets what we see. The result is work that rewards closer attention. What initially appears to be a single composition gradually reveals characters, eyes, creatures, patterns and smaller worlds contained within the larger image.

There is something particularly interesting about this approach because it places imagination partly in the hands of the viewer. Jay may create the lines, but what somebody discovers within them can be entirely their own.

Beyond the Original
Jay's creativity isn't restricted to artwork intended for a gallery wall.
His drawings have begun to move across different formats, including original works, framed prints, cards, T shirts, hoodies, tote bags and other accessible pieces. His current collection includes recurring designs such as The Machine, The Head and The Octo, allowing the visual language of his drawings to exist somewhere between contemporary art, illustration and wearable design. That willingness to experiment feels important.

An artist's work doesn't always have to exist within a frame. Sometimes seeing an image on a T shirt, bag or everyday object allows the work to reach somebody who might never consider themselves an art collector.

I'm looking forward to seeing where he takes the work next.

“I first came across Jay and his work at a local art fair. Amongst everything on display, there was something about the detail and individuality of his drawings that caught my eye, so I made the effort to go over, introduce myself and have a proper look at what he was creating. Then, sometime later, I bumped into him again at another art fair in our local area. Once again, I found myself stopping.I think there is something worth paying attention to when an artist's work catches your attention twice. What also stayed with me was Jay himself. He came across as a young, enthusiastic artist who genuinely enjoys creating. There was an openness and energy to the way he spoke about the work, and I enjoyed seeing how his ideas had extended from original artworks into prints, clothing and other forms.”
